Brian F. Colburn, 50, of Wilton was arrested on Friday, Aug. 9 after an investigation by Wilton Police showed that he was connected to the scheme that netted more than $20,000.
Wilton Police say they received a complaint from the Wilton High School football program and others affiliated with the Boosters in May 2019. The parties shared their suspicion regarding the organization’s finances, according to police.
Colburn became the president of the Boosters in 2016, and by the end of 2017, he had essentially “asserted sole control over Booster finances,” police say.
Further investigation revealed that funds donated to the Boosters were ultimately diverted from legitimate Boosters financial accounts into Colburn’s personal accounts, according to police.
PayPal records show that Colburn transferred more than $20,000 from the Boosters legitimate PayPal account into his personal PayPal account, police say.
When confronted by the Boosters' executive board in May 2019 regarding the organization’s finances, police say Colburn produced forged bank statements to make it appear as though there was more money in the account than there actually was.
Colburn surrendered himself to the Wilton Police Department on Friday, Aug. 9 around 6 p.m. after he was informed of the warrant for his arrest. He was charged with first-degree larceny by embezzlement and third-degree forgery.
Colburn was released after posting a $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Norwalk Superior Court on Monday, Aug. 19.
